Texas Concrete Tips

Best Time to Pour Concrete in Texas —
What Every Homeowner Should Know

Top Notch Concrete LLC · Seguin, TX · (830) 305-5143 · June 2026

Texas weather is unforgiving. Pouring concrete in 105°F July heat is a completely different operation than pouring in October — and if your contractor doesn't adjust for it, your slab will show it.

Here's what 10+ years of pouring in Guadalupe County has taught us.

The Best Months for Concrete in Central Texas

Hardest

July (peak heat)

The ideal concrete temperature at pour time is 50–90°F. The concrete mix itself heats up during hydration — in July, when air temp is 100°F and ground temp is 85°F, mix temperatures can spike fast, accelerating set time and increasing crack risk.

What We Do Differently in Summer

When we pour in summer months in Seguin, we adjust:

  • Early morning pours — We start at 6:00–7:00 AM, before peak heat hits
  • Ice in the mix — Replacing some of the mix water with ice keeps the slump consistent
  • Retarder additive — Slightly extends working time so we don't rush the finish
  • Curing blankets or curing compound — Applied immediately after finishing to hold moisture
  • Avoid afternoon finishing — We sequence the pour so finishing happens in shade or cooler temps

What Happens When These Steps Are Skipped

Plastic shrinkage cracks — the ones that appear within the first 24 hours — are almost always caused by surface moisture evaporating too fast in heat or wind. We've repaired hundreds of driveways and patios poured by contractors who didn't respect the Texas climate.

Winter Pours in Central Texas

Seguin rarely gets hard freezes, but we get enough cold nights (below 32°F) that winter pours need attention too. Concrete should not be poured when temps will drop below 40°F within 24 hours of the pour without cold-weather protection.

From November through February, we monitor weather forecasts closely before scheduling pours.

The Bottom Line

In Central Texas, spring and fall are ideal. Summer works if your contractor knows what they're doing. Winter is fine for most of our season. The worst thing you can do is pour concrete at 2 PM in July with no curing plan — we've seen the results, and it's expensive to fix.

Through every season, a concrete contractor in Seguin, TX who knows the local climate is what keeps your concrete driveway installation in Seguin from cracking.
